New York City: July 30th — Aug 2nd

Wow, it’s hard to narrow down four days in a giant place like Manhattan to one blog post!! It was my first time there and my family’s first time there as a whole.

is this a thing in other places beside the Manhattan Macy's? I've never seen a wooden escalator before.

I pulled an ultimate tourist move to get this picture-- by almost sitting on the ground. It's one of the ceilings in the New York Public Library, and it was too gorgeous not to capture in an appropriate way. (and apparently it's appropriate to sit down in the middle of a hallway. for art.)

what's that painting that's an optical illusion with staircases? this reminds me of that. in fancier marbled ways obviously.

Here's the one second I wasn't surrounded by fellow tourists in the NYPL

View of the southern tip of Manhattan from Battery Park. Wow.

It amazes me how a giant structure that holds thousands of people can blend into its surroundings. New York constantly amazed me.

Of course (being an architecture major) I had a field day with all the different types and styles of buildings in NYC, but I thought this picture especially really accentuated all the different styles that are seen.

At the North and South Pools (the exact sites of the Twin Towers), 9/11 museum staff come out every morning and put white roses into the names of people whose birthday would have been that day. Happy birthday on July 31st to Moira Ann Smith.

If you didn't know that this was at the (happy) ending of the 9/11 museum and Amazing Grace was playing in the background, this colorless photo would look kind of scary, don't you think?

I found it hilarious that they have stop lights for bikes in NYC. You wouldn't even notice it at first in this picture because there are so many lights and billboards and distractions. (we were close to Time Square)

A view where you can see thousands (millions?) of people at once. Worth the stairs and price.

This little guy had the best view in the house. (one of my favorite pictures of the trip)

Lovely restaurant, lovely food, even lovelier decorations that create amazing color schemes for a tourist's photograph.

“Two Men Contemplating The Moon”
As soon as I read the title, I thought “what were they contemplating? its shape? size? existence?”
Pictures of paintings are lovely, but standing in front of and seeing a painting in person makes the museum ticket worth it. Even this picture of Van Gogh's lovely texture can't capture the whole piece.
